The Cup Filler
Jesus Christ loves those who love Him. He also loves those who hate Him, even those who jeer and mock Him. He reaches out to obnoxious, unholy, unworthy, sinful people. He reaches out to the downcast and the outcast, the unwanted, and the unimportant. He reaches out in love to those who are overlooked, forgotten, and unloved. He then calls those who have experienced His transforming love to do the same (Matthew 22:39-40). A phrase in Psalm 23 states, “My cup overflows.” Loving others comes from an overflowing cup and, praise God, that is His promise to all believers. Cast off the view of both the pessimist who sees your cup as half-empty and the optimist who sees it as half-full. When God fills your cup, it overflows. As the chorus of the hymn says, “Fill my cup, Lord. I lift it up, Lord. Come and quench this thirsting of my soul. Bread of Heaven, feed me ’til I want no more. Fill my cup, lift me up, and make me whole.”
